Man made tragedies today such as global warming and terrorism have made all of us wonder what is it to become to the place we call home tomorrow. It is not a wrong choice of word when I use the word ‘tomorrow’ instead of common phrase ‘in the future’ simply because unexpected incidents by the act of God or humans will just happen anytime anywhere. Many have pointed their fingers to global warming when Mother Nature strikes merciless where human lives and homes are crushed as if we put a thumb on an ant. The unusual frequent happenings of earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions and the extreme change of weather temperatures have caused devastating effect to all of us. Whether or not this is a punishment from God for us humans taking most things for granted yet living behind a legacy of pollution is debatable.
Citing recent major natural disasters as a sign of warning to human’s habitat is not as bad as having humans killing humans in the names of ‘Gods’ and the presumption of ‘Rights’. It is understood that all religion and races, peace and harmony are the ultimate teaching and objectives of the survival of human kind. No one is above anyone and everyone has equal rights to choose their destinies. Current society’s stress and borders’ conflicts have resulted to unforeseeable tensions that have claimed innocent lives and destroyed once a healthy society. It is a fact that Rome is not built yesterday but this majestic empire can be taken down in a day. Terrorism has made possible horrible nightmares than once were thought impossible but today nothing is impossible when it comes to killing and destroying.
The world is hurting as if it is being thrust by a double edge sword with one edge being global warming and terrorism claiming the other. It is time for all of us to reflect on how did it all begun and how did we end up with this mess. These series of paintings entitled ‘Planet Earth Today & Tomorrow’ have mainly three main subjects namely the prominent bright red apple, splashes of black paint and sometimes human images. The combination of the red apple and human symbolize the Adam and Eve connotation of how we are created and differentiated. It was then an untainted piece of art showcasing a perfect world. However time flies and people change as the surroundings become more complicated and unpredictable. No doubt human minds have developed remarkably through science and art, but this development has also unleashed the dark side of many among us. Greed and power hunger have not only be sicken the place we call home but these evil behaviors have caused great sufferings to the innocents and unfortunates as if a splash of black horrible paint destroying a piece of good painting.
Today, it is indisputable that we are all stuck in the same place that we call earth. The clock is ticking. We may be heading back to another ice age if we continue to be ignorant and selfish. It is not only about this generation but generations to come. They, our children and grandchildren should have the right to breath fresh air and to bite tasty red apples.
