Week 5 - The hunt of an Animator

In this week, we been inform that will be only have a tutorial session with Mr. Charles. In this session, he corrected our questions to better proper instructions and he did asked us that is better that we could look for an animator to interview. Then, Mr. Charles suggested us to look for Mr. Martin Chong. Nick so then emailed Mr. Martin Chong. Surprisingly, he replied in a quite short time. After his reply us, we found out that he is not an animator, unfortunately, he is just a video producer. In between, he did introduce us to other lecturer which is actually teaching animation.

Again, Nick emailed Mr. Ng Kim Boon to ask for the time for interview unfortunately, Mr. Ng Kim Boon did not reply our next email due to time crashes.

Here are the list of questions:

Is being an animator sustainable in today's Malaysian society?

What inspired you to dive into the world of animation?

What is the toughest challenge you've gone through into becoming who you are today?

What made you change your mind to work for Taylor's?

You've taught several graduates and do you think that they have the capability to succeed? Is the TGC actually fulfilled?

Do you think that the concept of prioritizing the possession of a degree certificate instead of a person's capability advisable?

Between being an animator, graphic designer or interior designer, which is the most profitable of them all?

Are designers considered artists? Is there a difference between those two labels? Do you consider yourself as an artist?

Here's the revised version of last week's questions:

What inspires you the most to create such a personalized style for your bronze sculptures?

What sort of criticism have you received from your bronze sculptures?

What made you change from porcelain dolls to bronze sculptures and then finally to abstract painting?

What are you trying to prove or show through the creation of your bronze sculptures?

What is one of your most memorable achievements as a fine artist?

What is Malaysian art?? Is there such a thing? Are we too influenced by the western art industry until we have lost our identity?

Do you think it's advisable to major in fine art in today's society?

Which is more important, profit money or knowledge?

Are art centered jobs of today such as graphic designers complement fine artists?

What do you think determines the success of an artist? Is it the amount of money they make? or how famous they are? or maybe it's the level of how skillful they are in their profession?

Week 4 - The God of " Ugly " Bronze People

The God of " Ugly " Bronze People

Ch'ng Huck Teng born in 1972 is a revolutionary Malaysian artist who holds on to a sole purpose to spread the awareness of the beauty and significance of Malaysian art today. Being an avid art lover particularly the ones who are heavily cultural orientated and a very successful artist he has gained international popularity. Having solo exhibitions at countries such as Indonesia, Singapore and the United States plus winning awards over Eastern countries, he should be admired by many. Ch'ng is an artist who exudes skill in creating abstract impressionist paintings and a creator of bronze sculptures that has piqued the interest of many with oddly shaped features and figures. He is also the founder of CHT network and has acclaimed the position of President of the Penang Art Society.

Here are a list of his awards and solo exhibitions:

Here are a few samples of his sculptures:

Dragon-i

Angle of love

Black Knight

I was interested in what he sees or what he wants people to understand about his sculptures since they were aesthetically odd in a way and you know me I adore oddities. I thought it was also a good chance to ask him about the flaws of Malaysian art today and the challenges he faces when trying to promote it's own cultural beauty towards others.

Below are the list of questions that I have thought about:

What inspires you the most to create such a personalized style for your bronze sculptures?

What sort of criticism have you received from your bronze sculptures?

What made you change from porcelain dolls to bronze sculptures and then finally to abstract painting?

What are you trying to prove or show through the creation of your bronze sculptures?

Do you think that the Malaysian art industry can be spread internationally?

What are the profound differences between Malaysian art and Western art?

What are the aspects that are hindering Malaysians growth in terms of art?

Do you have any words or advices for young Malaysian to be designers and artists?

Week 4 ( Contextual Meaning Throught Semiotic )

Leonardo Pisano Fibonacci and Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo Pisano Fibonacci
-The "greatest European mathematician of the middle ages"
-Fibonacci's Mathematical Contributions

Leonardo da Vinci
-He had a keen eye and quick mind that led him to make important scientific discoveries, yet he never published his ideas.
-He was a gentle vegetarian who loved animals and despised war, yet he worked as a military engineer to invent advanced and deadly weapons.
-He was one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance, yet he left only a handful of completed paintings.

 Throughtout this lecture, said by Bulent Atalay, himself a scientist and artis "eyes was window to soul" already provent by Leonardo Pisano Fibonacci and Leonardo da Vinci. They combined mathematics + science and art in all of their artwork. Everything was done preferably and accurate. They did interpreter with mathematics and science. I have really no idea with how could they did so through the century that time.

Leonardo Pisano Fibonacci live 3 hundred years before Leonardo da Vinci.

Back to the Mathematics...

Let's look at the ratio of each number in the Fibonacci sequence to the one before it:

11=1
21=2
32=1.5
53=1.666...
85=1.6

138=1.625
2113=1.61538...
3421=1.61905...
5534=1.61764...
8955=1.61861...
Φ=1.6180339887...
This ratio was used by architects and artists throughout history to produce objects of great beauty (like Michelangelo's "David" and the Greek temples.)

Parthenon showing Golden Ratio
The Parthenon in Greece. The ratio of the distances indicated is the Golden Ratio.

Phi (Φ) is like pi (π) in the sense that it is an irrational number. There is no equivalent fraction for Φ and its decimal keeps going and never stops.

The Golden Ratio also occurs in nature, in the patterns we see in sunflowers, pine cones and so on. This is largely because one of the best ways to efficiently pack things tightly together is using the Fibonacci sequence.

here is the video that we had explained what we study through in class ..

The artist that we went to gellary the other day ..

Samsudin Wahab

Biography:
       Born in Perak
       Samsudin Wahab majored in printmaking, graduating in 2007 with a Bachelor (Hons.) Fine Arts from UiTM, Shah Alam
       He regularly exhibits paintings in group shows in Malaysia, and in 2008 held a solo entitled Enough! in Kuala Lumpur.
       In 2009, Samsudin was granted the Rimbun Dahan 15th Australia-Malaysia Visual Arts Residency, which culminated in an exhibition of paintings and sculpture, and a performance piece. Samsudin was also a 2009 winner of the Malaysia Emerging Artist (MEA) Award.
       Education
      2005 -  2007 : Bachelor (Hons.) Fine Arts, Majoring in Print Making, UiTM Shah Alam.
      2002 - 2005 : Diploma in Fine Arts, UiTM Seri Iskandar, Perak.

What he does?
       Using oil paint, bitumen, stencil and linocuts as his materials, Samsudin managed to portray the people, the culture, the society and the politics surrounding him into surreal editorial cartoons that emulate propaganda posters. There are chimpanzees in party hats and business suits juggling balls (‘Powerless’), and having boxing competitions in the ring (‘Lightweight vs Heavyweight’). There are plump clowns playing marionette (‘The Dalang’) and men in prim suits arm wrestling with cocked guns as heads pointing at each other (‘Boneka’).
       Samsudin Wahab blends influences from comic subculture, graphics and graffiti with such great dexterity that his visually stunning artworks carry with them a high dose of fantasy. On surface they may look like comics for adults, but underneath that layer of theatrics is a dark and satiric sense of humour documenting our world’s current affairs and historical events that are often sad, tragic and overlooked. It’s tongue-in-cheek and it’s high entertaining. By borrowing visual references from the circus such as juggling chimpanzees, playful monkeys and terrifying clowns, Samsudin Wahab managed to make his politically conscious works easily approachable and relatable to almost anyone. And that is his trademark.
